Graphic design guide
Scope of the guide
Short answer: Yes, a logo draft, poster idea or social media image can be produced with artificial intelligence; But for a design that will represent your brand, go to print and screen, and have a certain usage rights, the output must be selected, corrected and converted into a file by someone who knows the design principles.
I am Selçuk Aker; I am a graduate of Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Design, and I have been designing brand identities, catalogs, packaging and interfaces for over 19 years. I now see work produced with AI tools almost every week: Some of them are truly impressive. The problem is that looking impressive is not the same as doing your job. You let artificial intelligence do it and you think the job is done; but the logo is not readable in small size, the price in the catalog is written incorrectly, the social media image is indistinguishable from your competitor's. These errors are often not noticed at first; It occurs when the promotion begins, when the pressure comes or when the customer asks. In this guide, I explain the limits of designing with artificial intelligence with concrete examples, without exaggerating.
What does designing with artificial intelligence involve?
Today, when we say "design with artificial intelligence", we generally mean the following: tools that produce images from text, ready-made services that produce logos and business cards, artificial intelligence features added to design programs (background deletion, expansion, object removal), and tools that automatically fill presentation or social media templates. Each of these works at a different stage, and each produces a different type of error.
| Business | Where is artificial intelligence strong? | What needs to be checked? |
|---|---|---|
| Logo | Quick idea scan, style experiment | Originality, readability in small size, single color usage, vector file, registration compliance |
| Posters and brochures | Visual atmosphere, background, composition idea | Information hierarchy, spelling, Turkish characters, printing size and color mode |
| Catalog | Product image editing, page idea | Accuracy of product information, page system, price and code consistency |
| Social media image | Variation, rapid production | Brand consistency, differentiation from competitors, platform metrics |
| Interface (UI) | Screen sketch, component idea | Flow, states, accessibility, design system |
| Retouching and visual editing | Background cleaning, area expansion | Whether the product reflects reality, artifacts, resolution |
Things AI does really well in design
It would be dishonest to ignore the benefits that AI tools provide:
- Speeds up the idea phase: Seeing a concept in five different atmospheres provides concrete material to talk about in the meeting.
- Produces variation: Color, light and composition alternatives of the same idea can emerge within minutes.
- It makes difficult technical work easier: Clearing the background, expanding the visual field, and removing unwanted objects now takes much less time.
- Concretizes the brief: Turning abstract requests such as "warmer, simpler" into a visual example makes it easier to talk to the designer.
These benefits are all time-saving steps in a good designer's workflow. The design itself begins after these steps.
Unnoticed mistakes: hidden problems of beautiful-looking design
The real danger in design produced with artificial intelligence is that the error is not noticeable. An image that looks big and bright on the screen may behave completely differently where it will be used.
Brand inconsistency
A new image is generated with each request; but each one comes with a slightly different color, different light, different character. A month later, your social media account looks like posts from ten different brands. Brand identity consists not of beautiful individual images, but of repetitive decisions: the same color codes, the same font families, the same sense of space and framing.
Turkish characters and spelling errors
Image-generating tools still can't transcribe text reliably. Corruption of the letters "ğ, ş, ı, İ, ç, ö, ü", omitting letters, made-up words and incorrect punctuation are common. Even more dangerous are information that seems correct but is incorrect: date, phone number, price, address. If the date is wrong on the poster, even though the poster is beautiful, it is not doing its job.
Print file errors
Artificial intelligence outputs are mostly produced for the screen, in RGB color mode and pixel-based. A job that goes to the printing house must be prepared in CMYK or the color profile requested by the printing house, with sufficient resolution in its actual size, with a bleed margin of generally 3 mm (which may vary depending on the printing house), and with the text embedded correctly. A blue that looks vibrant on the screen can become dull on paper; Text placed too close to the edge may be lost in the cut. When these errors are discovered after printing, the cost doubles.
Copyright and licensing uncertainty
The conditions under which an image produced by artificial intelligence can be used depends on the usage conditions of the vehicle used and varies from vehicle to vehicle. Additionally, in order for a logo to be registered as a trademark, it must not be similar to existing trademarks; Tools fed by similar data can produce similar signals. In Türkiye, the Intellectual and Artistic Works Law binds the ownership of the work to the person who created the work; It is still controversial how to evaluate the output produced by a single tool within this framework. This is not a legal opinion; For long-lasting works such as logos and packaging, I recommend that you consult a trademark attorney or lawyer.
Showing the product differently than it is
A product image “beautified” by artificial intelligence in a catalog or packaging may change the color, texture or size of the actual product. This starts a chain of problems ranging from customer dissatisfaction to returns and complaints.
Similar works produced without knowing the basic principles
AI is powerful in the hands of someone who knows what is being asked of them. Someone who does not know the basic principles of design (hierarchy, contrast, alignment, spacing, typography) and what an ad does, chooses the first "beautiful" result suggested by the tool. When everyone uses similar tools with similar commands, the result is similar: the same soft lighting, the same gradient backgrounds, the same images of smiling people, the same three-dimensional icons.
Similar creatives hurt small businesses in two ways. First, the customer cannot differentiate you from your competitor; The person who sees the ad will not remember your brand. Second, the impression of being “made with AI” may be perceived as a lack of care in some viewers. The way to differentiate is not to produce more visuals, but to make brand-specific decisions. I explained these principles with examples in the graphic design elements and principles guide.
Loop: what happens when the design is thought to be finished?
Example scenario: A newly opened patisserie prepares its logo, menu and first social media posts with artificial intelligence.
- Fast production: Logo, menu design and ten posts ready in one evening. The images look nice.
- First application: The logo looks good on the sign, but it is not readable on the box label and social media profile photo. No vector files; It becomes blurry when enlarged.
- Printing surprise: When the menu came from the printing house, the colors were dull, the prices on the side were partially cut off, and the Turkish character in the name of a dessert was broken.
- Promotion with artificial intelligence: Advertising images are still produced; They are very similar to the posts of other patisseries in the area.
- No return, months pass: Even though the followers seem to be increasing, it is not reflected in the order; With each new need, visual language becomes more dispersed.
- Applying to an expert: Finally, you work with a designer or agency; The logo is reworked, the menu and packaging are re-prepared, and the printed materials are thrown away.
This cycle is the design leg of the big picture that I explained in the guide thinking the job is done with artificial intelligence.
Will artificial intelligence replace the designer?
It is clear that the speed of producing images has changed; It would not be right to ignore the decrease in demand for some routine jobs. However, the designer's main job was not to produce visuals anyway. It still requires human judgment to decide what a brand should say, put the information in the right order, set up a system that will remain consistent across hundreds of uses, make the file usable by the printer or developer, and take responsibility for the outcome.
In a product catalog like Pedaş catalog, the job is not one beautiful page; It is the inclusion of dozens of product codes, sizes and images in a consistent page system with correct information. AI can suggest a page idea; but it is a designer who decides what information will be featured, how the table will be read, and how the print file will be prepared. I made a similar evaluation in the article catalogue design with artificial intelligence.
Using artificial intelligence correctly with a designer: hybrid approach
The most efficient method is not to reject the tool or leave everything to it; At the right stage is to use:
- Write the brief: Describe in three sentences what you want to say, to whom, and what you expect the audience to do.
- Use AI at the ideation stage: Produce reference images for mood, color and atmosphere. Mark them as "draft".
- Leave the choice and decision to the designer: Evaluate which idea fits the brand and what should be eliminated.
- Create the final file in the design program: Draw the logo as a vector, write the texts in the design program, and prepare the print file according to the printing house's criteria.
- Write the rules of use: Color codes, text families, logo usage areas and prohibited uses should be collected in a single document.
- Try it in a real environment: Logo in small size, banner in real size, check the sharing on the phone.

Checklist before using a design produced with artificial intelligence
- Does the design comply with the brand's existing color and font rules?
- Have all texts, especially Turkish characters, date, price and contact information been read one by one?
- Is the logo legible in small size and single color? Is there a vector file?
- Have the color mode, actual size resolution and bleed for the print job been confirmed with the printing house?
- Have you read the commercial terms of use of the vehicle used?
- Has a similarity research been conducted on the logo or packaging to existing brands?
- Do product images reflect the actual color and size of the product?
- Can the design be distinguished from competitors' visuals?
- Do you have the source files in editable format?

Frequently asked questions about design with artificial intelligence
Can logo design be done with artificial intelligence?
Can be used for logo idea and style experimentation. However, for a permanent logo, originality, readability in small size, single color usage and vector file are required; These are often not available without passing through the hands of the designer. If you are considering registration, similarity research is also essential.
Do I need to know programming to do graphic design with artificial intelligence?
It may not be necessary to produce images. But making the output print- or web-friendly, placing text properly, and keeping the file editable requires a design program and basic design knowledge.
Will artificial intelligence replace the designer?
It changed the speed of producing images and reduced some routine work. However, it is still human work to make the decision appropriate to the brand, set up a system, prepare the file for production and take responsibility for the result. The role of the designer is shifting from production to decision and control.
Can I use the image produced with artificial intelligence commercially?
This depends on the conditions of use of the vehicle you are using and the content of the image. Conditions vary from vehicle to vehicle. I recommend that you consult a lawyer for long-lasting works such as logos and packaging.
Why does AI output look different in print?
Most output is produced in RGB color mode and limited resolution for the display. Printing, CMYK or the profile desired by the printing house, requires sufficient resolution and bleed margin. In jobs printed without conversion, colors may become dull and edges may be cut off.
Why are designs made with artificial intelligence similar to each other?
Similar tools are trained with similar data and users type similar commands. Someone who does not know the design principles and the difference of the brand often chooses the first result suggested by the tool. To differentiate requires brand-specific decisions rather than visual ones.
Can I have the design I made with artificial intelligence corrected by a graphic designer?
Yes. First, what the output does well and what it lacks is evaluated. Sometimes correction is enough, sometimes it is better to keep the idea and build the file from scratch. One should not assume that the fix will automatically be cheaper.
Artificial intelligence or designer for small business?
The two are not alternatives to each other. Artificial intelligence can speed up your work in daily, short-lived content. The system established by a designer allows you to use artificial intelligence correctly in works that will carry your brand for years, such as logo, corporate identity, catalog and packaging.
Can design be learned with artificial intelligence?
Tools can support learning, but they are not a substitute for fundamentals. It's difficult to evaluate output without learning to make hierarchy, typography, and composition decisions yourself. I have collected my suggestions for students in this article.
