Can Advertising and Social Media Design Be Done with Artificial Intelligence?

Ad design and social media visual with artificial intelligence: the harm of similar creatives, advertising strategy, measurement and hybrid use with the designer.

Graphic design guide

Scope of the guide

Short answer: Yes, advertising images and social media sharing can be produced quickly with artificial intelligence; But similar creatives produced without a strategy, brand language and measurement plan consume the budget and often do not bring the expected return.

I am Selçuk Aker; I am a graphic and UI/UX designer based in Istanbul and I have been preparing printed and digital communication materials for brands for over 19 years. There is a story I often hear when talking to small businesses: The product, site or application was created with artificial intelligence, and it was thought that the job was done. Then promotion was needed; Advertising images and posts are also produced with artificial intelligence. The advertising budget was spent, there were likes but no sales. After months, an agreement was made with an agency. This guide explains the promotional part of the cycle: what really works in advertising and social media design with artificial intelligence, and what quietly melts the budget.

What does advertising design make easier with artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence really saves time in advertising and social media production:

  • Quick variation: It is possible to see multiple versions of the same idea with different background, light and composition in a short time.
  • Option to test: Advertising platforms allow testing multiple creatives simultaneously; Artificial intelligence makes it easier to multiply these options.
  • Text draft: Generating initial alternatives for title, description and call to action.
  • Size adaptation: It is easier than ever to expand or adapt the image between square, portrait and landscape formats.
  • Visual editing: It takes less time to clear the background or change the environment in the product photo.

These benefits are invaluable to a team that knows what to say and who to say it to. If it is not clear what to say, artificial intelligence will only produce blanks faster.

Why do similar creatives cause harm?

The task of advertising is to attract the attention of the right person, remind them of the brand and take them to the next step. Because AI tools are trained with similar data and users type similar commands, similar results emerge: the same pastel gradients, the same bright product shots, the same “happy customer” faces, the same three-dimensional icons. This similarity becomes inevitable when someone who does not know the basic principles of design and what advertising is for chooses the first good result suggested by the tool.

The harm to small business is three-fold:

  1. You won't be remembered: If an ad scrolled through the feed is indistinguishable from your competitor's, the viewer will see only an image, not your brand.
  2. You lose trust: When a manufactured, perfect-looking product is shown instead of your actual product, the customer sees the difference in delivery. This may turn into complaints and negative comments.
  3. Testing is misleading: Testing five very similar creatives is actually testing a single idea five times. Results don't tell you what works.

I also discussed the problem of each post appearing to belong to a different brand in the article social media design with artificial intelligence.

Common mistakes when producing social media images with artificial intelligence

ErrorWhy ask?What should be done?
Different color and style in every postBrand unrecognizable, account looks messySet color code, font family and framing rules
Broken Turkish text written inside the imageImpression of carelessness, misinformationAdd the text in the design program after the image is produced
Cropping square image to portrait formatImportant information is cut off, remaining below interface elementsMake separate adaptations for each format, taking into account the safe area
Unrealistic product imageDifference between expectation and deliveryBase on actual product photo, keep editing limited
Made-up customer faces and commentsRisk of misleading advertising, loss of trustWork with real customer consent and real content
Exaggerated promisesPlatform policy and regulatory riskEstablish claims in verifiable, measured statements
Ad and landing page incompatibleVisitors cannot find what they are looking for, leaveContinue the advertising message on the landing page

The issue of text within the image is particularly important: Image generating tools still frequently distort letters such as "ğ, ş, ı, İ" and sometimes write the price, date or discount rate incorrectly. One wrong number in an advertisement can create both customer problems and regulatory risks.

Lack of advertising strategy: the main problem is not visual

Many small businesses blame the ad's failure on the visual and produce new visuals. However, the problem is mostly one step before: It has not been determined to whom the proposal is being discussed and at what stage.

A good advertising setup starts with the answers to these questions:

  • Target audience: Who should see this ad? Someone who is unfamiliar with the brand or someone who has visited your site before?
  • Offer: What do you offer to the audience? Free discovery, trial lesson, first order advantage?
  • Message: What is your difference from your competitors in one sentence?
  • Next step: Where will the person who clicks on the ad go, what will he do there?
  • Budget and duration: How many days, with what budget, with what result will the evaluation be made?

What does a “different idea” look like in practice?

Example scenario: A car wash business is preparing its first advertising campaign. Giving the AI “five advertising images” would likely produce five different angles of a shiny car. However, what needs to be tested is not the angle, but the message:

  • Time: "Ready in twenty minutes, drink your coffee while you wait."
  • Care: A visual showing the products used in interior cleaning and the work done step by step.
  • Price: A simple design that clearly shows the package contents and price.
  • Trust: A photo taken with the real team and real location of the business.

These four creatives are truly different from each other; Which one brings more appointments tells you what the customer cares about. Artificial intelligence works well to produce variations within each idea; But it is the person who determines the ideas and knows the business and its customers.

Without answering these questions, the creative produced is a random shot, no matter how beautiful it is. I explained the subject in the article why advertising creative is more important than your budget and the transition from the advertisement to the landing page in the article protecting the advertising message until application.

Legislation and platform rules

Commercial advertisements in Türkiye are subject to the supervision of the Advertising Board within the Ministry of Commerce; Misleading and unproven statements can cause problems. Advertising platforms also have their own policies; For example, in some sectors, before-after images or expressions that directly appeal to a person's characteristics may be restricted. Artificial intelligence does not produce by knowing these rules. This section is not legal advice; I recommend that you seek expert advice in sensitive sectors such as health, finance and food.

Advertising without measurement: where are the months going?

The most expensive part of the cycle is lack of measurement. The advertising panel gives the number of impressions and clicks; But if you don't know what the person who clicked did on the site, whether they filled out the form, searched, or purchased, you can't know what works. Then either everything is changed together or nothing is changed.

At least the following should be installed:

  • Source tags in ad links (campaign, content, creative name),
  • Measuring form submission, phone and message clicks on the site as conversions,
  • A measurement setup suitable for cookie preferences,
  • A written record of which idea each creative tested,
  • A short evaluation every two to three weeks.

I collected the design side of measurement in the post design KPIs and campaign measurement report.

Loop: when promotion is also left to artificial intelligence

Example scenario: A small brand selling homemade jam prepares its product pages and promotions with artificial intelligence.

  1. The product is ready, the job is thought to be finished: The label and sales page were completed quickly with the help of artificial intelligence.
  2. Promotion begins: Thirty posts and ten advertising images are produced in a week. They are all shiny, they all look alike and rivals.
  3. Budget spent: Advertising brings likes and followers; but the number of orders does not change.
  4. Looking for the problem but not finding it: Since there is no measurement, it is not known which ad lost on which page; new images are produced.
  5. Months pass: Brand language becomes more dispersed every month; Customers write in the comments the difference between the image on the page and the product received.
  6. Application to an agency or expert: Finally, an agreement is reached with an agency; The job starts with gathering the brand language, taking real product photos, establishing measurements and planning the campaign from the beginning.

I explained the product and site aspects of this cycle in the can a website be made with artificial intelligence and can an application be made with artificial intelligence guides, and the whole part in the thinking the job is done with artificial intelligence guide.

Using artificial intelligence correctly with a designer: hybrid approach

The most efficient model in advertising and social media is the one in which humans establish the strategy and brand system, and artificial intelligence accelerates production:

  1. Establish the branding system first: Let a designer define colour, typography, logo usage, visual style and tone. If necessary, apply the controls in the Can design with artificial intelligence guide for logo and identity.
  2. Prepare templates and grids: Create editable templates for sharing and ad formats. Artificial intelligence images should be placed in these templates and not change the template.
  3. Really differentiate ideas: Not five shades of the same idea; Test different messages (price, quality, convenience, story).
  4. Let humans write the text, let artificial intelligence diversify it: Let the main message come from you; Use artificial intelligence for alternative expressions.
  5. Use the real product: AI can support the environment and atmosphere; The product itself must be real.
  6. Measure and record: Note what each creative tested and its outcome; make the next production accordingly.

Checklist before running the ad

  • Are the target audience, offer and next step of the ad written?
  • Do the creatives comply with the brand's color, text and style rules?
  • Do the tested creatives truly represent different ideas?
  • Have all the texts, prices and dates in the image been checked one by one?
  • Do product images reflect the real product?
  • Are the human images and comments used real and authorized?
  • Has the safe area been observed in square, vertical and horizontal formats?
  • Does the message in the ad continue on the landing page?
  • Are forms, phone calls and sales steps measured?
  • Are the evaluation date and success criteria clear?

If you answer "no" to half of these questions, the problem is not in a new visual, but in fiction. If you would like to review your current advertisements and shares together, you can write to me from contact page.

Frequently asked questions about advertising and social media design with artificial intelligence

Can advertising be designed with artificial intelligence?

Yes, it can be used to generate variations, draft text and adapt formats. However, ads produced without a target audience, offer, brand language and measurement plan often consume the budget and do not bring returns.

Can social media images produced by artificial intelligence be used?

Available; But it should be arranged to comply with the color and font rules of your brand, the texts should be added in the design program and it should be checked that the visual reflects reality. Otherwise, each post will appear to belong to a different brand.

Why are ads made with artificial intelligence similar to each other?

Tools are trained with similar data and users type similar commands. When someone who does not know the design principles and brand difference selects the first suggested result, creatives similar to those of the competitors appear. Differentiation requires different ideas and brand-specific decisions.

Do similar creatives reduce ad performance?

Similar creative makes brand recall difficult and makes test results meaningless; because you will have tried the same idea several times. Since there are many other factors that affect performance, it is not right to attribute it to a single reason, but testing different ideas is always more instructive.

Is it a problem to use human images produced by artificial intelligence in advertising?

It can be used for atmospheric purposes; However, representing a real customer, employee or user may be misleading. I recommend using real, authorized content in ads that include customer reviews and user experiences.

Can artificial intelligence create advertising strategy?

Can offer options and ideas; but it does not know the real profitability, customers, stock and capacity status of your business. Target, bid and budget decisions should be made by people who know the job.

What should I check first if the ad does not bring any conversions?

First check whether the measurement is set up correctly, then whether the advertising message continues on the landing page, then whether the offer and target audience are clear. Changing the image should often be the last step.

How should a small business use AI in social media design?

The most efficient way is to prepare brand templates with a designer and use artificial intelligence for visual and text variation within these templates. This way, brand consistency is maintained while gaining momentum.

Agency or freelance designer for social media and advertising?

It depends on the scope of the need. Businesses that want media planning, management and design from a single source can work with an agency, while those who want to strengthen their brand system and creative can work with a freelance designer. I made this comparison in the article advertising agency or freelance designer.
