What is brand design?
Brand design transforms a business's identity and the value it offers into a visual system. The logo is a part of this system; It works with color, typography, visual usage and application rules. I, Selçuk Aker, as a brand designer and art director, develop the identity by evaluating it in real applications.
Before starting the branding work, we talk about the target customer, the difference of the product and how you want the brand to be perceived. Branding is not just about finding a new name. Defining name research, positioning, logo and application scope as separate deliverables makes decisions more understandable.
How does brand identity design proceed?
- We examine the strengths or shortcomings of the product, target audience and current communication.
- We determine the brand's message and evaluation criteria for visual direction.
- We compare logo, color and typography alternatives with usage examples.
- We test the chosen direction on real materials such as packaging, web, catalog or presentation.
- We organize the approved files and usage rules according to the deliverable scope.
If the brand consultancy expectation includes market research or commercial strategy, the research method and who is responsible should be determined separately. Visual design alone does not replace the entire business strategy. Trademark registration and legal compliance assessment are separate work of relevant experts.
Brand strategy, positioning and renewal
With businesses looking for a branding expert, I first separate the need for brand positioning and the scope of visual design. Brand strategy is related to the business objective, the customer and the value offered. We give priority to the materials that will be used first in startup branding work. Renewing the existing identity, that is, rebranding, may also require the preservation of recognized elements.
Difference between logo design and branding
| Work | Main deliverable |
|---|---|
| Logo design | Sign, text layout and necessary logo variations |
| Corporate identity | Colour, typography and materials of the institution |
| Brand guide | Rules for correct and consistent use of the visual identity |
| Brand application | Packaging, catalog, web and campaign designs |
New brand design and renewal of the existing brand are different needs. We evaluate which recognized elements will be retained in the renewal. It is not necessary to change everything; If the problem is only application inconsistency, it may be more appropriate to edit the existing visual identity.
Pedaş: common brand language across multiple domains
In addition to the logo and corporate identity for Pedaş, I work on the catalogue, box, packaging, presentation, website, social media and exhibition materials. This scope requires different deliverables to be prepared with the same brand language. We can talk about a similar scope through examples in my portfolio.
Brand design pricing depends on the scope of research, name study, alternatives, applications and guidance. You can narrow down your needs by comparing corporate identity design with brand guide content.
Frequently asked questions about brand design
Do you need a name or a logo first to create a brand?
Clarifying the basic aspect of the name and brand makes logo decisions easier. If the name is not yet final, it is necessary to plan the name study as a separate stage.
Can brand identity be developed with the existing logo?
Yes. After evaluating the usability of the logo, color, typography, template and application rules can be developed. Not every project requires logo re-drawing.
Is there packaging in the brand design package?
If packaging is included, the number of products and variants is stated in the offer. Brand identity delivery does not automatically include all packaging practices.
Why is a brand guide necessary?
It makes it easier for different teams to use the same identity correctly. Colour, text, logo spacing and application examples standardize repetitive decisions.
What you can share for Brand Design and Branding
Brand design, name, logo and visual identity with Selçuk Aker. Plan the branding process with packaging, web and social media applications.
- Product or service, target audience and competitors
- Current name, identity and reason for change
- Materials to be used first and delivery priority
Moving the brand design to the website
The colour, typography and visual approach in the brand identity must translate into readable displays on the web. In corporate website design I apply these rules to the menu, product page and offer areas. If the existing site does not match the new identity, we determine which elements to retain as part of website refresh.
