Brief and scope

Target audience, content, dimensions and deliverables are determined. Missing information is made visible before the design begins.

Design and evaluation

The proposed visual direction is evaluated on readability and brand fit; feedback is consolidated into one set of comments.

Delivery suitable for production

Different files are prepared for printing or screen. The source file and the scope of adaptation are clarified in advance.

Graphic design process consists of defining the need, developing the visual direction, applying the feedback and preparing files suitable for the usage area. As Selçuk Aker, I clarify which deliverables we will deliver before starting a catalog, packaging or campaign work. Print and screen versions of the same image may require different technical preparations.

1. How to prepare a design brief?

The brief is not just about sending the samples you like. It should be explained what the business is talking about, who it wants to reach, and where the design will be seen. Number of pages and products for the catalogue; technical drawing and variants for packaging; A content plan and dimensions for social media are initial information. We also determine who will prepare the texts and give final approval.

2. How to improve the visual direction?

I review brand files and existing applications. Then I create a direction through typography, color, visual usage and layout. At this stage, it may be better to decide on a sample home page, catalogue spread or packaging surface than to produce all adaptations too early. I relate the rationale for the recommendation to the need for use.

3. How to distinguish revision from new scope?

Editing the title or a correction to the approved content may be a revision of the agreed design. A new product line, a different campaign idea, or a completely changed page plan may require additional scope. It becomes easier to make this distinction when the evaluation rounds, responsibilities and deliverables are written in the proposal. Collecting conflicting comments under a single approval person saves time.

4. What information is needed in preparation for printing?

Cutting size, bleed area, color expectation, material and manufacturer's technical template are checked. Folding and adhesion surfaces in packaging; Page order and gutter in the catalog affect placement. The color seen on the screen does not mean the exact same result in printing. The need for proofing and samples before production should be discussed with the printing house or packaging manufacturer.

5. How to prepare digital delivery?

Platform dimensions, text safe area and file size are evaluated in social media and advertising images. In interface design, components, statuses and flows should be understandable rather than just providing a screenshot. Editable source file, font and image licenses and post-delivery update responsibility are also explained.

How does the process translate into my projects?

Although Pedaş's catalog, packaging and exhibition stand works have different production surfaces, they carry the same brand identity. In the interfaces I prepared for ERP Software, the focus is on screen layouts and the user's ability to follow the information. These two examples show why the graphic design process varies depending on the type of output. You can see the deliverables that are close to your project by reviewing the work selection.

How should you compare graphic design quotes?

Do not compare the total price alone. See if the main design, number of adaptations, revision scope, source file and production control are the same. Designer selection guide provides a checklist for comparison. By sharing the scope of your project we can together determine what work is required.

Frequently asked questions about the graphic design process

Can design be started before the content is ready?

The page plan and visual direction can be worked on. However, if the final text, product information and dimensions change, the layout may also change; Approved content is required for final file submission.

How many days does it take to complete graphic design?

The type of work, number of adaptations and content preparation determine the duration. A realistic calendar is created after the brief and approval stages are seen.

Can each file be used both in print and online?

Not always. Size, resolution, color and format requirements vary. Print and digital outputs must be stated separately in the delivery list.

Can updates be made after the design is finished?

Yes. The scope of additional work is determined by examining the source files to be updated, content changes and new adaptations.
