PWA or Mobile App? Decide Based on Your Customer's Business — Selçuk Aker

PWA is a web experience that can offer application features such as installability in environments developed and supported by web technologies. When deciding between a mobile application and a PWA, it is necessary to evaluate not only the budget, but also how the customer will access the product and what work he will do.

Where will the user come from for the first time?

A person who finds a service from a Google search or a shared link wants to access the information immediately. Requiring an app download before the process may create an additional step. For a regularly used work vehicle, the user may choose to have permanent access on their device. Drawing first visit and repeat use scenarios separately is a more solid start for selection.

For example, while fast access from the connection is important in an event program, disconnected operation and device features may be prioritized in the field team's daily checklist. These examples do not mandate a single technology; Indicates which features will be tested on the real device.

Installation, notification and offline use should not be assumed

The availability of capabilities described in the PWA documentation depends on the browser, operating system and application development. The PWA tag does not guarantee the same notification or installation behavior on all devices. Creating an offline order and then syncing it with an offline splash screen is not the same scope.

Prepare a small control matrix before the decision: target device, browser, required feature, expected behavior and alternative path. In the unsupported case, will the user be blocked completely or can they continue with another action? This question concerns both the design and development team.

Do not cram the web interface into the phone

When choosing a PWA, shrinking the desktop table is not enough. Long forms, file upload, return, session termination and phone keyboard should be designed separately for mobile use. Responsive design guide helps determine content priority.

When choosing a mobile application, it is not necessary to confine all content to the store. Web pages that describe the product, provide support and provide communication can serve a separate role. Don't interchange website search visibility with app store presentation.

Which document should come out of the decision meeting?

Instead of listing the benefits of the options at length, prepare a one-page decision record. Find the target user, mandatory features, the result of the technical trial, the first release scope and the next check date. This way, the reason for the choice is not lost when the team changes.

With Selçuk Aker, these usage decisions can be translated into screen flow when working on mobile web design or mobile app interface. Technical feasibility should be evaluated with the developer.

Frequently asked questions

Can PWA be installed on every phone?

Installation support and method may vary by environment. Verification should be performed on target operating system and browser combinations.

Does PWA work without internet?

Improved offline functions can work. What data will be stored, when it will be updated, and what to do when the connection is restored are also designed and coded.

Is it always cheaper to have a PWA?

No. Complex offline operations or custom integrations can increase cost. The decision should be made based on offers that include the same functionality and test scope.
