Catalog Designer

Product groups, technical tables and page layout with catalog designer Selçuk Aker. Create a readable product description for the print catalog and digital PDF.

Even though there are many products, make the choice easy.

Accessing the information sought in the catalog

Product classification

Category order supports the customer in finding the product he is looking for; In-house code layout alone may not be enough.

Page templates

Visually intensive promotions with intense technical information require different page layouts.

Digital reading

Links and navigation options within the PDF are evaluated separately from the requirements of the print version.

Catalog design is a job of organizing information

A catalog is more than just placing product photos in a row. Catalog designer establishes content order, category distinctions, and on-page hierarchy so the customer can compare products. I, Selçuk Aker, plan the page structure by learning how the sales team will use the catalog.

Matching product data and photo

Images of two seemingly similar products may be confused. Before starting the design, it is important that the product code, name, photo and technical data match in the same record. The page flow may change when missing information arrives later. Setting a date to freeze content and a responsible person to collect revisions reduces rework.

Ease of reading comes before page count

Fewer pages does not always mean a better catalogue. Compression of tables and small print may make product selection difficult. Instead, similar products can be grouped, comparison tables can be set up, or details can be moved to a separate section. In multilingual publications, text length differences are also taken into account.

Are the print and digital catalogs the same file?

The print version is based on the manufacturer's size and bleed requirements. In the digital version, file size, links, and on-screen reading are more important. Deliveries are separated accordingly. You can review scope of catalog design and working order with independent catalog designer.

Frequently asked questions about catalog preparation

Is the number of pages finalized from the beginning?

Forecasting is strengthened if the product and ingredient inventory is ready. Missing text, addition of new products or language may change the number of pages.

Can Excel work with a product list?

Yes. If the fields are consistent and the product codes match the images, content preparation becomes easier. Confirmation of missing data is again provided by the brand.

Is the catalog price calculated per page?

Page count is a factor. The need for a unique template, table density, visual treatments and language adaptations are also evaluated.

How do you keep your product information?

The match between the listing, photographs and technical sheets should be clear before design.

  • Product codes and category list
  • High resolution visuals
  • Technical data and language options
