Template or custom design? The decision depends on the actual content and functional needs of the site. A ready-made theme adapts existing layouts; custom design builds screens and information architecture around your requirements. Both can be applied well or badly. I’m Selçuk Aker. I assess scope, usability and maintenance before recommending a visual direction.
Ready-made theme or custom website?
A ready-made theme provides existing components and page layouts as a starting point. Brand colors and contents can be adapted; However, in structural changes, the limits allowed by the theme are important. In custom web design, page hierarchy, content areas and interactions are designed for the project. The approved design then needs to be implemented on the chosen platform.
| Decision criteria | Ready-made theme | Custom design |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Current layout and components | Screen structure derived from requirements |
| Content fit | Theme should be tested with real content | Layout can be created based on content |
| Custom user flow | Limited by the theme and plugins | The flow is designed, then implemented separately |
| Budget | Must be calculated including licensing, adaptation and maintenance | Design and application scope should be calculated separately |
| Maintenance | Theme and plugin updates should be monitored | Agree who maintains components and code |
| Delivery | Licensing and administrative access should be disclosed | Source file, code and usage rights must be disclosed |
WordPress or custom design?
These options are not opposites of each other. WordPress is a content management system; It can be used with a ready-made theme or with a custom designed theme. Requiring a custom interface design does not mean giving up on content management. WordPress theme documentation explains the theme's role in presentation and appearance.
Ask for three separate decisions in the proposal: will the design be ready-made or original, which content management system will be used, and who will maintain the implementation? The phrase “custom website” alone does not answer these questions.
When should you consider each approach?
A suitable theme may be sufficient for a promotional site with limited content and a standard contact form. If there is a wide variety of product information, different customer tasks or a unique offer flow, custom information architecture and interface design may be required. These are sample scenarios; It is not an automatic decision for every business.
Test the theme with your longest heading, real photos and product tables, rather than judging it only by its demo images. The mobile menu, form error status and content editing screen should also be included in the evaluation. In the custom design option, do not confuse Figma presentation with working website delivery.
Which is better in terms of SEO and accessibility?
The label “custom design” or “ready-made theme” does not determine SEO quality. Crawlable content, descriptive titles, correct addresses, performance and usability are checked in the real application. A custom design can also result in slow, inefficient code; A ready-made theme can also be cleared of unnecessary components. Keyboard usage, form labels, and mobile readability should be tested in both approaches.
See total cost when comparing budget
Add content preparation, theme and plugin licenses, hosting, maintenance and future changes to the initial price. I explain the offer items separately in the website price guide. If only some areas of your current site are problematic, limited editing may also be considered within the scope of website redesign.
Determining design scope with Selçuk Aker
My Pedaş and Yatcim web works are examples where I handle the content and visual identity of the business together. I do not assume the infrastructure of these projects here; my portfolio demonstrates the design approach. In my web design service we determine the page structure, mobile screens and developer handoff according to your project. If you need a new identity, brand design can also be addressed in the same plan.
Frequently asked questions about template and custom design
Can a site using a ready-made theme be ranked on Google?
Yes. Using a theme alone is not a ranking barrier. Many factors such as the quality of the content, technical access and meeting user needs are evaluated together; Theme selection does not guarantee ranking.
Can I update the custom-designed site myself later?
If a suitable content management system is installed, you can update it. Which areas you can edit, training and management access should be explained at the proposal stage.
Is a ready-made theme always cheaper?
The initial cost may be low; However, intensive customization, licenses and maintenance can change the total price. Do not draw definitive conclusions without comparing the same content and scope of functions.
Does delivering a Figma file mean the website is ready to launch?
No. A Figma file is a design deliverable. Coding, content management, hosting and publishing are separate jobs; Which party will take responsibility must be determined at the outset.
