What is Lorem Ipsum? When to Switch to Real Text in Design? — Selçuk Aker

Lorem ipsum is sample text used to temporarily replace text that is not yet ready in the design. It may help to experiment with text density and placement on the page. However, meaningful content is not a substitute for actual title length and user direction.

As website designer Selçuk Aker, I recommend moving on to actual content as early as possible after the initial layout. A card that looks perfect with a placeholder can expand to three lines when the actual product name arrives; The balance of the entire page may change.

Limit the questions the placeholder can answer

At the draft stage, you can evaluate the approximate size of the text area and its relationship to the image. However, the questions of what the user will understand, which link he will press, and what information he will look for cannot be tested with meaningless text.

It may not be enough to write "Title here" instead of a title. Prepare sample titles with actual subject and expected length. If the content is uncertain, state that it is conjecture; Do not proceed as approved text.

Pre-select the most difficult context situations

Try a short and long name, price description, and availability information for a product card. Include a long description as well as a one-sentence promise on a service page. What will be displayed when the list contains no items must be designed separately.

When discussing screen coverage with mobile application designer Selçuk Aker, it is necessary to evaluate not only full and successful situations, but also error, gap and loading situations. The texts of these states are part of the function of the display.

Do not use lorem ipsum in button and error message

The button text should tell the user what action will take place. The error message should explain what happened and how to proceed if possible. These are different from the provisional text used to measure overall paragraph length.

For example, instead of "There was a problem" in the file upload area, a text explaining which condition was not met may be required. However, do not write a reason that the system does not actually know as if it were a given in the design. Text and technical behavior should be matched with the development team.

Re-evaluate the design when the content changes

When the actual text arrives, do not change just the words. Double-check row breaks, section relationship, link names, and mobile overflows. If there will be content in a different language, try to see if the same space works with longer texts.

Wireframe and prototype decisions and typography guide are two integral parts of this check. In the final submission, it should be clearly marked which texts are final and which are pending.

Frequently asked questions

Is it wrong to use lorem ipsum?

It may be useful in the initial settlement. The actual text should be used for usage, content and understandability tests.

Can I publish the site with sample text?

The information the visitor needs must be ready. Do a pre-publication content check to ensure placeholders are not forgotten.

Can't design start if the content hasn't been written yet?

It may start; however, the purpose, content types and approximate scope must be known. Save ambiguous areas as assumptions and retest with real content.
