Font selection in logo design is more than just finding a nice-looking typeface. The length of the brand name, Turkish letters, small usage size and production method should be evaluated together. Letter structure that looks strong on a screen may not maintain the same clarity on a woven label or narrow sign.
Try the brand name itself first
Type the actual brand name instead of the words on the font's sample page. Examine uppercase and lowercase letter options, letter spacing, and where similar formats appear next to each other. Drawing letters such as İ, ı, Ş, Ğ is a part of the design, especially in Turkish names.
Choosing a font just because it is popular may leave the question of distinguishing the brand from its competitors unanswered. If a calm, technical or friendly character is desired, talk about this through usage examples; Avoid making definitive personality judgments based on font class alone.
Separate logo text and corporate text font
The letters in the logo may have been specially drawn or changed. This does not mean that all website and catalog text should be written the same way. For long text, a readable font family, appropriate weights for headings, and a clear layout with numbers are required.
I recommend that these text usage rules be defined as well as the logo file in the delivery of Corporate Identity Design. I am Selçuk Aker; In graphic design works, I evaluate typography on different surfaces together.
Discuss license before file submission
Just because a font file is available on the internet does not mean that it is free to use. Read the license terms of the font to be used. Conditions may vary for logo, desktop work, webcasting, app embedding and in-team use. Who will receive the necessary license should be announced at the proposal stage.
Converting text to vector does not automatically eliminate the need to check the font license. Font access and usage rights should also be considered so that the editable file can be opened in another team.
Run small size and production trials
- Try the logo on social media profile and small product label.
- Check whether the letter spaces are closed in the single color version.
- For embroidery, embossing or laser application, request samples from the manufacturer.
- If there is a long subheading, re-evaluate its relationship with the main brand name.
Logo usage tests moves the typography decision beyond the presentation image. After all, the goal is not to choose the most flashy font, but to make the brand's name read consistently under different conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can a professional logo be made with free fonts?
Yes, it is possible with the appropriate design decision and a license that meets the terms of use. The fact that it is free does not in itself indicate quality or the extent of the right to use it.
Is it necessary to send the logo font to the customer?
Not every license allows transferring font files. The vector logo, the need for editable files and the licenses that the customer must obtain separately should be clearly stated in the delivery.
