Headless CMS and Micro Frontend: What Should a Designer Plan? — Selçuk Aker

Headless CMS is a content management approach that aims to serve different interfaces by separating the content from the presentation layer. Micro frontend is an architectural approach for developing a large interface in separate parts. The two are not the same thing; Using both does not automatically make a small website more successful.

For basic concepts, read Contentful CMS description and micro frontend architecture article. The evaluation here focuses on the impact of architecture on design delivery.

Design the content model first

A service card may require title, description, image, link and sorting information. If the same content will be displayed on the mobile application, meaningful areas should be considered instead of just a long block embedded in the desktop page. The designer should share with the developer the situations where fields are short, long and empty.

For example, if a product's technical documentation has not yet been uploaded, a blank download button should not appear. In CMS, required fields, publication preview and language versions should be planned according to the editor's role. Content management guide completes this workflow.

Establish common language across separately developed screens

The micro-frontend approach can help different teams develop parts independently; However, if the menu, form, error message and typography differ, the user will see a fragmented experience instead of a single product. Shared design rules and component versions are therefore important.

Design system delivery should include not only colors and buttons, but also terms of use. For example, two sections should not use different colors and behavior for the same notification type.

Discuss technology choice responsibly

  • Who will update and approve the content?
  • How will the difference between preview and live broadcast be seen?
  • What status will the user see when the integration does not work?
  • Who will be responsible for access, maintenance and versioning?

Ability for search engines to access content, performance and security must also be implemented and tested; The architectural label does not guarantee these. Selçuk Aker's role in freelance interface design is to clearly convey user tasks and screen behaviors to the developer. Server architecture and security decision is the responsibility of the relevant technical expertise.

Frequently asked questions

Do small portfolio site need headless CMS?

If it does not require content flow and maintenance, a simpler solution may be sufficient.

Does API design affect the interface?

Yes. Delays, incomplete data, or errors should be addressed on the screen.

Can designs be independent when using micro frontend?

Development independence should not mean inconsistent user experience.
