Ratio and Safe Area Plan in Social Media Images — Selçuk Aker

Do not prepare social media images based on pixel size alone. Aspect ratio, cropping, and areas covered by the interface determine the visibility of the message.

Solve for ratio, select pixel then

Square, vertical and horizontal surfaces require different compositions. For example, you can create 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 and 16:9 layouts in the working file; These are not immutable installation rules for all platforms. Verify the current technical conditions of the placement to be published on the official help page of the platform. Don't assume that organic posting and ad placement are the same.

Move critical elements away from the edge

The profile icon, description, play button, or other interface elements may cover part of the image. Designate a safe internal space for the headline, product, and call to action. Do not think of this area as a fixed and universal pixel boundary; Preview by layout. Also check full screen view with cropping in profile grid.

Relocate instead of resize

If fitting the horizontal image into the vertical space forces you to make the text smaller, change the layout. Move the product to another location, remove secondary text, or move it to the description. The order of elements may change without changing the main message. Decorative space that is useful in one format is not necessarily preserved in another.

Name the delivery file with the publication location

Include campaign, placement and version information in the file name. The publisher should not guess which file is prepared for which area. Check the preview generated by the platform after installation; The file that looks correct locally may be recompressed or cropped differently. Instead of duplicating the measurement guide in a new entry each year, update it in the same entry and note what has changed.

What columns should be in the delivery matrix?

Create separate columns for platform, organic or ad usage, placement, rate, working resolution, file type, and check date. Do not write the profile image and the post image on the same line. For example, for a brand campaign, the feed image, vertical video and profile cover may require three different controls.

When you want to use a file on different platforms, do not just compare the size. Clipping, interface elements, and the amount of text to read also vary. Adding the actual preview note next to the formatting table allows the next designer to understand why a different layout was made.

TikTok vertical video and safe space guide and Google Business Profile image preparation tackle these two different publishing spaces on their own terms. Do not prepare a proposal or delivery schedule with the assumption that the main design will automatically fit all dimensions.

Sample working dimensions for square and vertical design

Examples of 1080 × 1080 pixel square, 1080 × 1350 pixel 4:5 portrait and 1080 × 1920 pixel 9:16 portrait workspace examples can be used to concretize the ratio calculation. These are not the current list of mandatory measurements for all platforms. The technical condition and installation preview of the selected layout must be verified separately with each delivery.

When creating the same campaign in these three areas, keep the headline and product on separate layers. Shrinking the entire image to convert the vertical layout to a square can make the text unreadable. You may need to keep the primary message and move the secondary description into the broadcast text.

Output control of photo and written image are not the same

Look for the loss of detail in the photo, letter edges and thin lines in the text-heavy image. Instead of re-compressing the file, get a clean output from the main design. Determine which file format to use based on the support of the publishing venue and the result in the actual preview. Instagram profile design guide further explains the difference between single post and profile view.

Frequently asked questions

Is it enough to use the correct pixel size in a social media image?

In addition to pixel size, ratio, cropping and areas covered by the interface are also important. Check critical text and images in actual publication placement; Do not accept one output as suitable for all areas.

How should social media submission files be named?

Add the format and version next to the campaign or content name. Distinguishing between square post, vertical story, and other adaptations helps prevent the wrong file from being published.
