Reels and Short Video Design: Files to Prepare Before Shooting — Selçuk Aker

Just asking for “something moving” for reels or short video design does not constitute a sufficient brief. Write down what you want the viewer to understand, what materials are available, and where the video will be published. Product promotion, event announcement and application explanation do not need the same structure.

Are video editing and motion graphics the same job?

Video editing involves selecting and ordering existing footage, editing their duration and audio relationships. Motion graphics; It is the design of text, shapes, icons and visuals over time. Both can be used together in a single project. The scope of shooting, voice recording, music supply and animation is determined separately. This distinction indicates which production work is actually involved when comparing bids.

Split the content file into three parts

The first section should include a one-sentence goal: Which feature of the product should the viewer remember? The second section should contain image and text inventory. Let the closing action be defined in the third section; such as going to the product page or contacting. Do not try to fit all services, a long company promotion and campaign into the same short video.

Check availability of stock images

Whenever possible, share files in their original form rather than compressed versions in the messaging app. Check whether the product is cut in the frame, the lighting, and the intelligibility of speech, if any. If the color and clarity levels of different shots are very different, it may not be possible to hide this with transition effects alone. Missing plans should be listed before editing begins.

Text for silent viewing and small screen

Subtitles help understand the speech; The highlight text on the screen selects the important point of the narrative. Displaying very long subtitles, large titles and product descriptions at the same time makes it difficult to read. Check the time the text stays on screen with an actual reading attempt. See the current release preview for areas the platform interface will cover; Do not assume that a single fixed safe area applies in every environment.

Set up approval flow with time codes

Instead of saying “the middle is fast”, specify which information cannot be read at which second. First, the order of expression and duration, then color and small visual details are evaluated. Once the portrait version is approved, the horizontal version should not be considered ready automatically; Different framing may require separate placement. The submission list should clearly state the rates, subtitled versions, cover, and scope of editable project files.

You can share your visual and short video needs in social media design, and examine how the same idea is carried to different media in format adaptation guide.

Frequently asked questions

What design information should be determined before shooting for a Reels video?

Write the main message, scene order, on-screen texts and broadcast formats. Discuss with the shooting team in advance whether space is needed for titles or subtitles in the frame.

How would it be more understandable to describe the short video revision?

Write down the timecode, current state, and desired change together. For example, specifying which text will change at which second is more feasible than a general acceleration or coloring comment.
