Testing On-Shelf Comprehension of Packaging — Selçuk Aker

Do not examine packaging design alone. Check with small comparisons how the product type, variety and main difference are perceived on the shelf.

Replace like question with task

The question of which one is better depends on personal preferences. Instead, ask the person to find the specific product, separate the two varieties, or explain what the packaging contains. Determining in advance the question that the design should answer transforms incoming comments into actionable changes. During the interview, do not make statements that imply the correct answer.

Set up a realistic shelf view

Place the draft next to neighboring products of similar size. Enlarged packaging in presentation can hide text that cannot be read from a real distance. A physical mockup and a photo of the shelf taken with a phone show different problems. If reflective materials are used, additionally examine the loss of information under light; The screen preview does not replace the print result.

Examine in three layers

The first layer contains category and brand, the second layer contains type and quantity, and the last layer contains detailed information. This order does not have to be the same for every product; It varies depending on the customer's choice. While the roast or bean origin may be distinctive in a coffee series, the area of use may be more decisive in a cleaning product. Verify the examples with your own product research.

Separate design finding from sales outcome

It is a useful observation that a user can more easily recognize the product; It is not direct evidence of sales growth. If price, shelf position, distribution and campaign change at the same time, do not attribute the result only to the packaging. Write down the behavior observed and the design change made in the test note. Check if the problem is actually solved by repeating the same task on the new version.

Check online product image separately with shelf

The packaging is seen in its physical size in the store, and in a small photo in e-commerce. A subtle product name that does well in shelf testing may not be selected in the listing image. Examine the same sketch in both the actual packaging mockup and the product listing view. Improve the framing of the product photo if necessary; Do not replace information on packaging with a promise that does not actually exist.

Don't assume that all customers decide in the same amount of time or that a particular color is sure to sell. Record the confusion you observe for your own product. Packaging designer selection is a complementary guide to evaluate print preparation together with use testing.

Frequently asked questions

For packaging testing, is it enough to ask "Do you like the design?"

Likes do not indicate a correct understanding of the product. Ask the participant to find the product type, variant or distinguishing information; Observe what information is mixed up.

Does a positive result in the shelf test mean an increase in sales?

It cannot be interpreted directly like this. The test may provide findings about intelligibility or recognition; Sales also depend on other factors such as price, distribution and product demand.
