Senior Graphic Designer: How Do You Consider Experience in Design Decisions?

A senior graphic designer is not just someone who uses design programs quickly. The real reward of experience is; is to clarify an incomplete brief, narrow down the options with justifications, and check that the design works in real use. Being a senior describes the level of experience, and being a freelancer describes the working model. They cannot be used interchangeably; A senior designer can work either within the company or independently.

I'm Selçuk Aker. As a Graphic Design graduate of Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, when evaluating a work, I look not only at the final image, but also at what need that image was achieved. The most useful evaluation for the employer is to ask about the decisions behind the brilliant presentation in the portfolio.

Look for decision reasons as well as results in the portfolio

When you see a catalog page, ask why that product is featured. If the answer is only "it looks better", the connection between commercial need and design may not have been explained yet. Reasons such as making it easier to compare products, separating technical information, or speeding up the presentation of the sales team are more evaluable goals.

In the portfolio interview, ask for three things together: the initial problem, the proposed solution, and how the deliverable is used. If it is not possible to share real project information, the decision process can be explained through an anonymous example instead of confidential customer data. The large number of visuals alone does not indicate the depth of the experience.

Reducing uncertainty before starting design

When a business says "let's look corporate", this may have different implications in the catalogue, packaging, website and sales presentation. The experienced graphic designer translates this statement into a doable task list. It asks from the beginning who the content will come from, who will approve it, and the technical expectations of the producer.

For example, if catalog photographs have not yet been taken, two decisions are required: with what assumption will the design begin, and which pages will be revisited when the photograph changes? At what points should you see quality control?

• Content control: Are the title, product name, price and contact information from the correct source?
• Visual control: Are the text, color and layout rules consistent in applications of the same brand?
• Usage control: Is information read on the small screen, at the actual print size or when viewed from a distance?
• Delivery control: Are the correct version, required file format and usage description combined?

All of these checks are not the sole responsibility of the designer. The brand must confirm the content accuracy and the manufacturer must confirm technical conformity in its field. The senior designer's contribution is to establish a control pattern that prevents confusion of responsibilities.

Is it necessary to say yes to every request for feedback?

Professional collaboration is not about implementing every change without question. If enlarging the title obscures the product information, the designer should explain the effect and offer an alternative. Opposition should not be based on personal taste, but on the goal determined at the beginning.

Separating the feedback into “mandatory information correction”, “design choice” and “new scope” makes decision making easier. Conflicting comments given at the same meeting can be compiled into a common list. In this way, it is understood which problem will be solved before discussing the number of revisions.

Interview questions to select experienced designer

Ask him which design idea he gave up on the last project and why. Listen to how he checks in when a printing or display problem occurs. If the designer can explain with whom he will confirm the technical issue he does not know, this is also an important working skill.

Also clarify who will personally design the work and who will participate in the discussions. The title of Senior does not imply that a single person will do every job or guarantee error-free delivery. Don't confuse designer skills with the personality tag

Being curious or creative can be valuable; But job evaluation should be based on observable behavior. Does the designer describe the problem correctly, explain his decision, sort through the feedback, deliver the production file correctly? These are more concrete criteria than general personality adjectives.

In quality control, consider message, typography, visual source, technical output and version layout separately. Calling every mistake “carelessness” can make missing processes invisible. If there are repeated errors, also correct when and by whom the check was made.
