Reviewing Brand Identity Examples Without Copying — Selçuk Aker

When using corporate identity examples, examine design decisions rather than copying the format. The testimonial board should make visible the questions to be answered for your brand.

Find the rule behind the appearance

Don't just label the work you like as modern, simple or premium. Note concrete preferences such as the difference in scale between headlines and text, use of whitespace, photo orientation, and repeating color ratio. How is the same logo positioned on different surfaces? How does the layout stretch when a long title arrives? These questions help understand the system behind the visual.

Test with your own usage area

The application weight of an ID prepared for a museum may differ from the needs of a manufacturer. Just because the reference looks good doesn't mean it will work on your quote document, vehicle wrap or product label. Choose your three priority surfaces and consider the outcome of each reference decision on those surfaces. Do not allocate budget for applications that do not need to be used.

Generate decision note instead of similarity

On your board, under each image, write down what you're looking at: strong typographic contrast, a color system that holds different products together, or a simple hierarchy of information. Taking the symbol, original pattern or entire composition of a brand exactly does not mean learning from a reference. Re-establish the principles you learned from different sources through your own content and target audience.

Evaluate the result by recognizability

Examine the prepared essays side by side with the competitors' images. Is the remaining language distinguishable when you temporarily remove the logo? At the same time, is it clear that the applications belong together? This study does not replace legal trademark research; but it helps to see visual similarities early. The delivery should include not only sample applications, but also the usage rules that enable them to be produced.

Choose comparable examples rather than large numbers

Seeing thirty identity images in a row can be inspiring; But in order to make a decision, it is necessary to examine the examples with the same questions. If one draws attention with the logo and the other with an expensive photo shoot, do not consider them as the same design success.

Choose three brands and compare each with their small logo usage, typography layout, packaging and digital execution. Write the common principle in your own words. Then try that policy with a different name, content, and usage condition. If the look is still too similar to the source, go back to your own brief, not the reference.

This analysis can also be made through the works of logo designer Selçuk Aker. Read the applications in the portfolio not as ready-made templates of your own brand, but as design decisions made for different problems.

Separate cliché and need in sectoral logo examples

It may be a common choice to see a building in a construction logo, a leaf in an agriculture logo, or an arrow in a logistics logo; But these symbols are not mandatory for every brand. Explaining the sector and agreeing with the similar signs of competitors are different results.

In the example of a restaurant, signage and menu; tag and small profile icon in a boutique example; Compare the actual usage areas such as presentation and project sheets in the architecture office. Find the decision that helps understand the message, do not carry the symbol of a particular brand.

Selçuk Aker's design portfolio is available to review my own work. I do not present other designers' logos as examples I produced. Recording the designer's name and source link in reference research also preserves this distinction.

Frequently asked questions

Is sending the brand identity I like as a reference considered copying?

Sharing a reference is different from reproducing the same format. Explain which decision worked in the example; Develop a unique solution for your own brand goal, content and terms of use.

How do I test whether a corporate identity sample will fit my brand?

Think of the example system with your real content: long product name, offer file or small profile icon. Look at its operation in daily use, not just the aesthetics in the presentation.
