Establishing Social Media Visual Language in Small Business — Selçuk Aker

Streamline your small business' social media design with a few repeatable rules. While the campaigns, products and information sharing appear to belong to the same brand, they should undertake different tasks.

Separate share types

The product announcement, frequently asked question, and customer use case do not have the same information density. Prepare a separate starting layout for each. First, determine what the post expects from the reader: getting to know the product, answering a question, or getting in touch. Attributing all purposes to each post creates chaos in a small space.

Make a small number of fixed decisions

Define roles for the title and body text, uses for colors, and a common approach for photos. Maintain these decisions instead of locking every post into the same template. For example, the product image may change, but the hierarchy of the price or description block may remain constant. The person preparing a new design should know where he can flex.

Try it with real content

Put the long one next to the short product name, and the example that requires comparison next to the single photo. If your drafts work only with ideal content, it will not make the daily work of the business easier. Read text on the phone screen without zooming. Give detailed description in the post text or on the relevant product page instead of squeezing it into the image.

Leave a small usage file

Keep color and font rules, image resources and sample correct application along with ready-made templates. Check the items that will not be changed. Don't rely on the number of likes alone in your regular review; Incoming questions, misunderstandings and transitions to the correct page also signal. If a design attracts a lot of attention and creates wrong expectations, correct the message first.

Maintain the same visual language across media

Adapt an announcement by preserving the message and visual priority instead of sending it to every platform with the same file. Task information can be featured in the recruitment announcement, and the product itself can be featured in the product sharing. While brand colors and text roles are fixed, the photo area used and the length of the description may vary.

Plan file preparation and content idea development separately according to the platform. Four measures of the same idea do not mean that four separate ideas are produced. For Instagram, I also discuss the relationship between the entire profile, the single post and the video cover in the Instagram profile design guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many social media templates does a small business need?

There is no single correct number. Identify recurring content types such as product announcements, information sharing and campaigns and prepare templates accordingly; Do not complicate the system with unnecessary variations.

What should be delivered if the team is going to use social media templates?

Provide short descriptions of the use of colors, text and images along with the editable files. Make the boundaries of the template visible by showing examples with a long title and different photos.
