Awareness Campaign Design: Linking the Message to Concrete Action — Selçuk Aker

It is a striking visual start to the awareness campaign; The question is what people will understand and what they will do next. Changing a symbol or removing a word alone is not enough. The visual decision must have a clear relationship to the theme and appeal of the campaign.

Learn a mechanism, not an idea, from an example

NHS Blood and Transplant's Missing Type campaign used the missing letters A, B and O to draw attention to blood donation. The connection here was that the lack of visuals was directly related to the topic. This example is not my project. Rather than repeating the same letter removal idea on another brand, the principle to learn is that the message and the format explain each other.

Define a single behavior first

Do you want people to read an information page, register for an event, share a specific resource? Placing multiple calls to the same image obscures the priority. For example, for a local workshop, the topic, participation conditions and registration method should be clear. An emotional slogan does not replace this information.

Test visual idea without context

Show the design to someone who is not familiar with the subject and ask what they understand. If the intention of the campaign does not match the message the person reads, do not leave the explanation to the subtext alone; Re-evaluate the main image. This is where the difference between being surprising and being unclear comes into play. Don't assume the reader already knows the topic.

Consider the participation path a continuation of the design

The short link in the banner, the description of the social post and the page that opens should have the same call. If the registration page contains a different title or ambiguous conditions, the expectation established by the visual is disrupted. Readability on the phone screen and the language used are also part of this chain.

Evaluate the result in the correct context

Being seen, shared, and targeted behavior are not the same measurement. A large reach number alone does not indicate that all goals of the campaign have been achieved. Don't present an impact you haven't measured as a design success; Write clearly what you observe.

Viewing distance in banner design and message consistency on ad page guides help keep the campaign idea readable on different surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

Is success in an awareness campaign measured only by the number of shares?

The number of shares can indicate spread; It does not alone prove that the expected behavior has occurred. Define the campaign purpose from the beginning and separately evaluate relevant outcomes such as participation, applications or access to information.

How should the call to action be written on the awareness poster?

State concretely what the reader will do and where they will do it. Provide a clear way to participate alongside a general slogan; check that this way works on phone too.
