Do not treat English and Turkish web pages as translations alone. Plan language migration, content ownership, and hreflang relationship together.

Multilingual Web Design: Translation, Layout and URL Plan — Selçuk Aker

Multilingual website design is a broad task from translating the same text into another language. Product names, communication format, price presentation and sample studies may not have the same meaning in different markets. With a freelance web designer, it is necessary to initially determine which languages can actually be kept up to date.

Prepare translation inventory on a page-by-page basis

If the home page is translated and the form warnings remain in Turkish, the experience will be incomplete. Also add menu, button, image description, download file and post-send messages to the inventory. Designate a content officer for each language; Set a control date to prevent old product information from being published in another language.

For example, when choosing the English equivalent of the phrase “freelance graphic designer”, consider the scope of service. Graphic designer, UI designer and product designer do not describe the same job. The English page should actually describe the services and deliveries offered.

Try the layout with the longest actual content

If the short Turkish button falls on two lines in another language, the card height may change. Design flexible fields for long titles, addresses, date and number formats. If there is a language written from right to left, such as Arabic, the change in direction should not be considered only as text alignment.

The choice of language should take the visitor to another version of the same content whenever possible. If there is no translation, explain the options available rather than silently moving the user to an unrelated page.

Hreflang specifies the language association

Google's guide to localized pages explains how language versions refer to each other and to themselves. Hreflang is not a ranking guarantee or translation tool. Separate language URLs, correct language codes and reciprocal links should be verified by the technical team. Giving canonical to a single language URL without considering translation pages should also be considered.

When preparing the web design scope with Selçuk Aker, we define the number of languages, screens to be translated and design adaptations as separate deliverables. If old addresses will be changed, URL migration plan should also be added to the study.

Frequently asked questions

Is the flag sufficient for language selection?

A country and a language are not exactly the same. Presenting language names in a readable format is a clearer start.

Should automatic translation be published directly?

Service scope, technical terms and commercial promises should be checked by a responsible person who knows the language.

Is a separate design required for each language?

Common system can be used; but adaptation may be required for text length, writing direction, and market information needs.
